6x10B Drawing Invitational
April 4 @ 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
In October of 2023 we held an exhibition of drawings all focused around the use of the 6H pencil. Inspired by William de Kooning and his teachings at Black Mountain College in the 1950’s. We invited 10 artists to participate by creating original artworks all using the same materials. With this new exhibition we see the challenge re envisioned, and with it a new set of parameters for both the Artist and their Artwork. Here it is as presented yet again by curators Jeff Geib, Evan Kitson, Matt Chapman & Nicole Duquette:
Moved by the success and sheer enjoyment discovered in the 6H challenge, we have invited 6 artists to participate and have outfitted them with the same materials, the Faber Pitt Matte 10B, and the Mitsubishi Hi Uni 10B *, the same surface to work on **, and the same amount of time to develop an original work of art ***. In a sense still pulling from the thread of de Kooning, as he was inspired to teach using the lessons that had a great impact on him as a student. We have asked these 6 artists ,all educators, to look into their own teaching practice and pull a lesson that they ask their students to complete.
Participating Artists:
Matt Allyn Chapman
Dorothy Frey
Jeff Geib
Evan Kitson
Jason Ward
Zane York
