The Racial Equity Institute, Level 1, workshop (REI-1) is an intensive 2.5-day workshop. REI-1 represents the YWCA Lancaster’s core social justice training program. This workshop gives participants a common understanding of racism and related concepts, including but not limited to, bias, white privilege, internalized racism, and structural racism. YWCA Lancaster views REI-1 as a foundation for working toward dismantling the institutional and systemic racism that is present in our lives, and in the institutions and organizations of which we are all a part. Participants leave the Racial Equity Institute experience equipped with a better understanding of the separate work, experiences, and responsibilities of People of Color and White People. Workshop enrollees are introduced to a fundamental anti-racist, multi-cultural model which can lead to a tangible plan of action for themselves and/or their team. Workshop participants learn through multiple modalities, including journaling, workbooks, exercises and toolkits. These tools can be used to study, question, and better understand the history, context, and impact of racism on individuals and society.
