‘My Lancaster’ Community Art Workshop – Carving Community: Wood Relief Paintings
June 26, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Free
Join us for a special group of workshops throughout the month of June, ‘My Lancaster’, hosted by the Crispus Attucks Community Center! Charles Demuth often painted scenes of Lancaster city, reflecting his surroundings and the architecture of his everyday life in Lancaster. Create art that depicts the buildings and structures that are the backdrop of YOUR everyday life at these workshops! All art pieces created in these workshops will be photographed for inclusion in a slideshow within the Smokestacks and Skyscrapers: Modern Moments from the 20th Century exhibit. Be sure to visit the Demuth Museum before July 25 to view the show!
Carving Community: Wood Relief Paintings
Age Group: Teen & Adult
Instructor: Matthew Lawrence, School District of Lancaster
The art of relief carving has been used for thousands of years in architecture, providing a canvas to tell a community’s story and enhance the beauty of buildings through decorative details. Using visual references of the building in our community they are inspired by, students will create a hand carved wood block that is enhanced with color paints. Sharp tools will be used in this workshop and participants must be at least 13-years-old. Please bring a printed image of the Lancaster City building you wish to feature in your work.
Workshops are free, but pre-registration is required. Visit demuth.org or call 717.299.9940 for registration information.
