The Demuth Museum’s first exhibition of 2019 will be our annual Invitational, showcasing the work of over forty contemporary artists from Lancaster and the surrounding region who have been invited to exhibit new works based on a given theme. The theme this year is Market Muses. Charles Demuth often painted the produce his mother purchased at Lancaster’s Central Market, capturing the beautiful colors and forms of eggplants, apples, squashes, pears, and more. The 2019 Invitational is challenging our artists to be inspired by Central Market and its vendors’ delicious offerings, just like Demuth once was. Central Market remains a prominent attraction in our City and source of local produce and goods for Lancastrians. The coming year marks the 130th anniversary of the opening of the Market House just off Penn Square that welcomes thousands every week, and we would like to take the opportunity to celebrate the important landmark in our community.
