Gillian Wainwright “Backyard Paintings” Exhibition Opening

Join us Saturday, September 10th for the exhibition opening and artist reception for Gillian Wainwright “Backyard Paintings.” Wainwright, a graduate of the California College of Arts and Crafts and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, has exhibited her work across the United States in solo and group exhibitions. Lancaster Galleries is pleased to present Wainwrights’ paintings for the first time in Lancaster, PA.

“I have always loved to work from life, particularly outdoors, where the changes in light, weather and season provide endless variety. Almost invariably the chase to capture something of that particular moment fuels an urgency that helps the paintings. During the pandemic I retreated into my home as painting outside in the city landscape did not feel safe. I became obsessed with making my small urban backyard into a lush garden and this in turn became my new subject. Suddenly everything was on another level. I was so deeply involved with what I was painting. I have never before felt such a sense of connection. My intense interest in this garden project has been a wonderful revelation of the joys and sometime sorrows of gardening and has helped me to really notice the incredible array of changes from day to day.”

“I’ve learned so much painting in this garden — the more you look, the more you stay in one place and really look, the more you will see. And I truly feel that this is just the beginning.”
