On the 150th Anniversary of the 14th Amendment (July 1868) as well as the death of Thaddeus Stevens (Aug 1868), considered the father of that essential amendment, Lancaster’s scholars, civic leaders, and activists confront Birth of a Nation’s political and social legacies to explore the connection between media representations and lasting cultural attitudes on race. Screening of film (Part 1) at 6:30; panel discussion to follow. Part 2 will screen on October 2 with a different panel. Copies of the 14th Amendment with Thaddeus Stevens commemorative coins will be available to up to 100 attendees. Panel: Dr. Patrick Bernard, Associate Professor of English, Program Chair of Africana Studies at Franklin and Marshall Dr. Sarah Brooks, who uses the film in her Educational Foundations classes to discuss historical interpretation in films.
