Public art is any publicly accessible work created by an artist. It can be a bronze statue, community mural, decorative gate, street furniture, playground equipment, bike rack, fountain, abstract sculpture, or computer projection that has been commissioned and designed by an artist.

The City of Lancaster Public Art Program was established in 2010 to enhance the appearance of public places. Lancaster City’s Bureau of Public Art works with organizations and individuals in the public and private sector to facilitate the development of, and information about, public art.

This program provides opportunities for all citizens to participate in the process of planning and selecting public art. It celebrates diversity in Lancaster’s neighborhoods by promoting its culture and history through public art.
